Spravato is the brand name for a prescription nasal spray containing esketamine (S-ketamine).

The effects of Spravato begin quickly, typically within 5 to 15 minutes, and the core of the experience is a transient dissociative state. This is an expected part of the treatment, and patients are monitored throughout for comfort and safety.

• Dissociation and Altered Perception: The most significant feeling is dissociation, which is a sense of detachment from one’s body, thoughts, and the immediate environment. Depressive feelings and anxieties can feel distant or muted. Perceptions of time and space often become distorted, and the surroundings may feel strange or dream-like.
• Mental and Emotional State: The mental state is often described as calm, floaty, or dream-like. Some patients report mild euphoria or profound emotional insights, while others may experience temporary confusion or feel emotionally vulnerable. A healthcare provider is present to offer support throughout this period.
• Visual Effects: It is common for patients to experience mild to moderate visual changes. These can include seeing colors and lights more vividly or perceiving gentle geometric patterns, especially with eyes closed.
• Physical Sensations: Common physical sensations include dizziness, a feeling of light-headedness or floating, and numbness, particularly in the face, fingers, and toes. A patient’s blood pressure is monitored before and after treatment as a temporary increase is a common side effect.
